SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

Travelling as sustainably as possible

We believe that the power of travel can be a force for good and life changing. Those who have the privilege of exploring gain knowledge, empathy, and understanding for the many ways of living around the world. Travel also has the potential to be just as beneficial in supporting local communities, cultures and environments and it is on all of us to ensure that it does. We will strive to inspire, guide, and enable you to gain a deeper, richer, a more connected perspective, and to give you a meaningful holiday experience with your journeys through us.

With every holiday a donation is made to our environmental partner Mossy Earth, experts in rewilding,

so that we assist in:

1. protecting seagrass meadows and kelp forests that lock up carbon at a rate 30 times faster than trees. They also improve the water quality and provide crucial nursing grounds for fish, dolphins, as well as seahorses.

2. restoring the ancient woodlands with native trees after deforestation from grazing sheep and deer, to bring back the landscape to a wilder state and help lock up carbon.

3. supporting research to better protect sea otters as they prey on sea urchins, who graze on kelp, to ensure the health of kelp forests and protect the many other species that thrive there.

4. reintroducing termite mounds, in savannahs, to change the soil structure so that it retains more water and in turn generates islands of fertility and an abundance of plants.

5. restoring ponds in the UK to help lock up carbon and provide drinking water to wildlife and can even prevent floods.

Destinations

There are so many destinations to see and learn about the wonderful wildlife in their natural habitat and we research wildlife tourism and seek out responsible tour operators so that we can continue to protect wildlife without the cost of their wellbeing. We can witness Gorillas in Rwanda, Lions in Botswana, Tigers in India, Orang-utans in Borneo or Polar bears in the Artic and many other destinations with small and large species and ensure that we enforce an industry free of animal cruelty.

You could even experience a leisurely voyage around the Galapagos Islands with your family or friends, accompanied by a team of naturalist guides, pointing out so many species such as turtles, penguins, blue footed boobies, sea lions and sunfish.   We want you to become an ambassador of the different species and their habitat and help leave a positive impact for future generations.

Experiences

Food is inevitably linked with culture and identity, and so spending time to find the best and most authentic places to eat is essential to understanding a country whilst ensuring you are supporting local communities and economies. The production and disposal of food are huge contributors to our carbon footprint, we want to ensure ingredients are both procured and disposed of in a manner that benefits a region.

We try to choose suppliers that use local and organic produce, compost what is not used but fundamentally only buy what is needed, to reduce waste.  You could take a private cooking lesson in a paddy field in SE Asia, see how spices are grown in India, join in Uruguay’s summer food and wine festival, search out the most authentic home cooking in Turkey, learn to cook true pasta dishes in Italy or sample the street food with a local guide.

  Be prepared

  • Pack reusables, such as a water bottle, coffee cup, and cutlery, refuse single use plastics, and recycle when this cannot be avoided.

  • Bring your own toiletries in reusable bottles.

  • Only use reef safe sun lotions. Pack a reusable bag for shopping.

  • Try not to have towels and sheets replaced daily but only when required.

  • Do not ride animals that shouldn’t be ridden, such as elephants or pet wild animals as they are drugged for you to do this.

  • Research and learn local customs and traditions and immerse yourself in the local culture.

  • Purchase locally made souvenirs (preferably handmade) and pay a fair price.

  • Avoid any purchase of wildlife produce such as ivory. Walk, bike, or use public transportation when possible.

  • Take shorter showers and avoid baths to reduce water usage.

  • Turn off lights, heat/AC (try and reduce usage), and TV when you leave your room.
